Benjamin Bonzi v Alexei Popyrin Head to Head
This will be the second meeting between these two players, with Bonzi currently leading the H2H 1-0. Their previous match occurred at the Ourense ITF in Spain, where Bonzi was the top seed. The Frenchman eased his way past Popyrin 6-2 6-2.

Bonzi takes on Popyrin tomorrow, but his current priority will be the final of the Cherbourg challenger which he partakes in today against Lestienne. On his way to the final, he has dropped just one set, defeating Rosenkranz, De Schepper, Draper, and Bergz to reach the final.
Preceding his challenger run, Bonzi also reached the 2nd round of the Australian Open, defeating Gojowczyk in straight sets in the opening round. His progress was halted by Russian Khachanov in the next round, losing to the 28th seed 6-4 6-0 7-5.
The 25-year-old also won a round in the Adelaide 2 event against Carballes Baena, defeating his Spanish opponent 6-3 6-3 in the opener, before losing to Paul 6-4 7-6(6) in the second round.

Popyrin Desperately Seeking a Win
Popyrin will be desperate to beat Bonzi in the opening round of Marseille and score his first win since the 5th January and end a 4-match losing streak. His only win of 2022 came in Melbourne (Summer Set) against Travaglia where he won 7-6(5) 6-3. Griekspoor then got the better of him in the next round 6-3 4-6 6-3.
Popyrin has also suffered defeats to Martinez in Sydney, losing to the Spaniard 6-4 6-4. Then at the Australian Open losing a 5-set battle to Rinderknech 7-5 4-6 6-2 3-6 6-3 in a 3-hour+ battle. An opening defeat was also suffered against Krajinovic in Montpellier, losing to the Serbian 7-5 7-6(3). The losses continued most recently occurring in Rotterdam, falling short to Khachanov in 3-sets 6-7(4) 6-1 7-6(6).
Popyrin will be desperate to win to regain that winning feeling and level up the H2H against Bonzi, therefore, there is a lot on the line for Popyrin. A win for the 7th seed would set up a tie against a qualifier in the second round, where he would likely be the favourite to reach the quarter-finals.

With just 2 places between these two players, there is very little between these two players and a tough match to predict, and a tie that could easily go to 3-sets. Despite being the unseeded player in the encounter, Bonzi is the slight favourite to get the better of Popyrin and extend the H2H against the Australian.
