Ruud In Top Form

Following a 57-17 season, which included five titles, Norway’s Casper Ruud has had a brilliant start to 2022 as well. He heads to Rio having picked his first title of the season last week in Buenos Aires.

The World No. 8, who was a champion in Buenos Aires in 2020, rallied from a set down to defeat Diego Schwartzman in the final last Sunday for his second Argentina Open title and a seventh career title. Ruud had started the season with a 2-1 record at the ATP Cup but unfortunately missed the Australian Open with an ankle injury

He brings a 6-1 season record to Rio, where he was a semifinalist in 2017 and a quarterfinalist in 2019. In his last appearance in the tournament in 2020, he went down to Gianluca Mager in the first round in straight sets. It will be a massive upset if he loses his opening match this year.

A terrific clay court player, the 23-year-old was 28-5 on the surface last year and is 4-0 this year. He would look to keep that unbeaten run intact on Thursday.

Cerundolo Makes Solid Start on Rio Debut

Fresh from another decent showing in Buenos Aires, Francisco Cerundolo began his Rio Open campaign with a solid win over World no. 52 Benoit Paire in the first round on Tuesday.

The World No. 100, who reached his maiden ATP Tour final at the Argentina Open last year, made it to the quarterfinals of the tournament as a qualifier this year, but yet again Diego Schwartzman proved to be his nemesis, halting the 23-year-old’s run.

Cerundolo however quickly put the setback behind, winning the opening round match on his Rio debut.

After both players exchanged a break in the first four games, Cerundolo took control of the set, breaking Paire two more times and capturing the first set. The Frenchman was down 2-4 in the second as well, but he came back well, winning four consecutive games and forcing the decider. Cerundolo regrouped and took charge of the third, breaking Paire twice to clinch the two-hour-and-10-minute match 6-3, 4-6, 6-2.

The Argentine had 17 break points in the match and he converted six of them, while saving four of seven that he faced.

Ruud v Cerundolo Prediction and Tip

Despite Crundolo’s good form, he will find the going tough against a player of Ruud’s quality. Expect the second seed to advance with a straight sets win.
