Lorenzo Sonego v Miomir Kecmanovic Head to Head

The pair have played each other twice before. Sonego won their final on the grass of Antalya in 2019, but it was Kecmanovic who won their most recent encounter, just last month, in the third round of the Australian Open.

Sonego Faces Another Serb Opponent

Sonego has continued the momentum he gained in 2021 into the new season.

He reached the quarters-finals in Sydney, and then the third round in Melbourne, before his run was ended by Kecmanovic.

Then he made the quarter-finals in Cordoba, and last week, in Buenos Aires, went one better by getting to the semi-finals in Buenos Aires, before losing to Diego Schwartzman in three sets.

In the first round in Rio, he met another Serb in the form of Laslo Djere, and he thrashed the world number 56, dropping just two games to the world number 56 in an utterly dominant performance.

Qualifier Kecmanovic Brushes Aside Wildcard

Kecmanovic was one of the principal beneficiaries of Novak Djokovic’s eventual exclusion from the Australian Open.

Originally slated to meet his fellow Serb in the opening round, he took advantage of his absence in their part of the draw to make the fourth round of a Grand Slam for the first time in his career, before eventually losing to Gael Monfils in straight sets.

He then switched to South American clay and made the second round in Buenos Aires before losing to the local player Francisco Cerundulo.

The Serb was made to qualify in Rio, beating first Gustavo Heide of Brazil, and then Hugo Dellien of Bolivia, in straight sets,  where he went on to meet the Brazilian wildcard, Felipe Meligeni Alves, the world number 234, in the first round.

The match began with both men dropping their serve twice, but then Kecmanovic settled down, got the measure of his opponent, broke him again, and from there the result was never in doubt. He reeled off seven games in a row, taking the second set to love, to advance to the next round.

Sonego v Kecmanovic Prediction and Tip

Kecmanovic may have won their match last month at the Australian Open, but that was on fast, outdoor courts. On the clay of Rio, Sonego will be playing on his favourite surface, and will be confident of maintaining the form he has shown so far this year to make yet another quarter-final.
