Petra Kvitova v Irina-Camelia Begu Head to Head

Petra Kvitova owns a commanding 5-1 head-to-head record against Begu. But it is pertinent to note, the Romanian World No. 54 stunned the Czech at the St. Petersburg Ladies Open 6-4 6-0 earlier this month – her only win thus far in the series.

Can Kvitova Reach A Fourth Final?

In her last three visits to Doha, Petra Kvitova has walked away with the golden falcon trophy twice, defeating Garbine Mugurza each time for the prize, while finishing runner-up in 2020.

Last year, Kvitova was in devastating form in the Qatari capital. She knocked off the likes of Pavlyuchenkova, Anett Kontaveit, and Jessica Pegula before outsmarting the Spaniard Muguruza for the loss of only three games in the final.

It is a big if, but if Kvitova can summon her best tennis on these shores this week, it would take a brave person to bet against her from winning her third title here, or least of all, reach her fourth final.

However, Kvitova has endured some disappointing results in 2022. It hasn’t been all plain sailing for the two-time Major champion who is 4-5 for the season after that chaotic loss to Jelena Ostapenko in Dubai last week. She spurned a match point en route to a 5-7 7-5 7-6 defeat.

Another early exit this week could have serious ramifications on Kvitova’s ranking. The World No. 25 will have a chance to redeem herself from her St. Peterssbrug defeat to Irina-Camelia Begu when the pair square off right out of the gate.

Can Begu Author Another Upset?

One of the least-expected results of this new season was Irina-Camelia Begu’s win over Petra Kvitova in St. Petersburg. Begu had lost all five meetings against the Czech prior to that and only managed to take a set in that time.

And given Kvitova’s superior record on the indoor hard courts of St. Petersburg, she was bound to inflict a sixth defeat in a row in the series.

But Begu played superbly, reeling off winners and forcing the Czech lefty to go for more. Kvitova was an unforced error machine in Russia’s second city, but admitted she was not operating at 100 percent.

Without taking the gloss from that upset, Begu deserved to win that match and went on to reach the semifinals proving that win was no fluke. The Romanian is now on a two-match winless streak following her second straight defeat at the Dubai Championships to Dayana Yastremska this past week.

Kvitova v Begu Prediction and Tip

Kvitova has been struggling with a wrist injury since late last season, which partly explains her poor results in 2022. But I was generally impressed with her form in Dubai last week. She was extremely unfortunate not to close out that Ostapenko match when she had the chance to, but I fully expect her to bounce back at her happy hunting ground.
