Elise Mertens v Jasmine Paolini Head to Head

Mertens and Paolini have played three times before this. The Belgian leads the overall series 2-1, but Paolini shocked the World No. 22 in Indian Wells last season.

Mertens Clinches Dubai Doubles Title

Elise Mertens did not have a lot of joy on a singles court in Dubai last week as she lost her first-round match to Elina Svitolina. That defeat came just four days after her quarterfinal exit in St. Petersburg.

It means the Belgian is staring at the likelihood of losing three matches in a row ahead of a return to the Qatar Open. Mertens did suffer a similar run last June when she lost three on a trot, but there is a feelgood factor in Doha where she has not lost a first-round match in each of her last three visits.

The World No. 22 did manage to console herself with the Dubai Doubles title during the weekend. She teamed up with Veronika Kudermetova (who incidentally lost the singles final to Ostapenko) and the pair of them defeated the team of Ostapenko and Lyudmyla Kichenok.

Mertens has put together a 6-4 record in singles so far this season, but an impressive 8-1 in doubles which included a semifinal finish at the Australian Open.

The 2019 winner of the Qatar Open will be looking to avenge her recent loss to Jasmine Paolini when the two of them lock horns in the first round in Doha.

Paolini Set For Doha Debut

The Doha draw has accommodated Jasmine Paolini because it is a 56-player field this year and a WTA 1000. The Qatar Open and Dubai Tennis Championships usually alternate in terms of category/designation each year.

While Paolini had to go through qualifiers in Dubai this past week unsuccessfully, she doesn’t have to worry about those rigors this week.

Currently sitting at career-high ranking World No. 46, the diminutive Italian will make her main draw debut in Qatar’s capital as a dangerous floater. Paolini has forged a reputation as a pesky opponent for the top-seeded players in the earlier rounds. She has also developed her game to suit all court surfaces as highlighted in her breakthrough year in 2021.

Paolini won a hard court title in Portoroz and the other on the clay of Bol. She has made a slow start to 2022, having not registered a notable result just yet. Could it happen in Doha?

Mertens v Paolini Prediction and Tip

Paolini doesn’t have any momentum in her stride right now and Mertens should be able to advance with little fuss.

Tip: Mertens to win in straight sets: 8/11 (Click Here to Bet with bet365)
