Jarry Looking to Rebuild His Career

Three years ago, Jarry was a top 40 player, and had appeared in three ATP finals, winning the title at the Swedish Open in July of that year.

But then he tested positive for two banned substances Ligandrol and Stanozolol, and was banned from the sport for the best part of a year, returning to competition in November 2020.

He has since been trying to rebuild his career and reputation, mainly on the Challenger circuit, where he won two tournaments last year.

So far in 2021 he has concentrated on qualifying for clay court events in South America, which he did successfully in Cordoba and Buenos Aires only to be defeated in the first round each time.

He was spared the task of qualifying for his home event courtesy of a wildcard.

Brazilian Number one Monteiro

Monteiro is the current Brazilian number one, although, like Jarry, he is mainly found these days on the Challenger circuit, where he appeared in three finals in the latter part of 2021, winning an event in Portugal, and finishing runner-up in Argentina and Brazil.

He has achieved some success on the senior tour so far this year, reaching the quarter-finals in Adelaide.

Since returning o South America, he lost in the first round in Cordoba and then went one better in Buenos Aires.

He also lost in the second round in Rio a few days ago, but not before taking the top seed, and world number six, Matteo Berrettini, to three sets.

Jarry v Monteiro Prediction and Tip

Although Jarry has home court advantage, he is still trying to regain his former level before his drugs ban. Monteiro has more experience of the main tour these days, and should have the edge.
