Last year’s Doha semifinalist Jessica Pegula began her 2022 campaign in style, as she breezed past the Czech Republic’s Katerina Siniakova in the first round on Sunday.
The World No. 17 went up a break early in the first set, but Siniakova got the break back in the seventh game. The American restored the advantage in the very next game and then held serve to close out the first set.
With the first set in the bag, Pegula took control of the second set, breaking the World No. 48 twice to seal the match 6-3, 6-2 in just 70 minutes.
Following the win, Pegula improved her season record to 6-4. After starting the year with back-to-back first round defeats in Melbourne and Sydney, she went on to reach the quarterfinals of the Australian Open, defeating Maria Sakkari in the fourth round, but she fell to Ashleigh Barty in the quarterfinals.
In Dubai, last week, the 27-year-old defeated Cori Gauff in the first round but lost to Ons Jabeur in the Round of 16.

Juvan Knocks Out Fellow Qualifier
World No. 90 Kaja Juvan has been impressive over the last three days. She won her qualifying rounds on Friday and Saturday and then knocked out Switzerland’s Stefanie Vögele on Sunday to win a third first round match this year.
Juvan, who stunned Aryna Sabalenka to reach the quarterfinals in Adelaide, lost in the first rounds of Adelaide 2 and the Australian Open, but won her opening round match at St Petersburg against Alison Van Uytvanck. Having reached the main draw after winning three qualifying rounds, she rallied to beat the Belgian in three but fell to Belinda Bencic in the Round of 16.
Against Vögele on Sunday, the 21-year-old right-hander had 10 break point chances and she took six of them. Her opponent, meanwhile, converted three of four break points but that wasn’t enough as the Slovenian won 6-4, 6-2 in an hour and 20 minutes.
Juvan had beaten Kazakhstan’s Anna Danilina 6-2, 6-2 in the first qualifying round and Belgium’s Maryna Zanevska 2-6, 6-1, 7-5 in the second qualifying round.
