Novak Djokovic v Karen Khachanov Head to Head

There have been four previous matches between these two players and Djokovic leads 3-1.

This includes a win at the 2020 French Open in their last match-up and another in Dubai that very year. Khachanov’s only victory over Djokovic also brought about his only Masters title – at the final of the 2018 Paris Masters.

Djokovic Begins the Season with a Win

It might be a bit strange to read that heading but that’s how things have gone – nearly two months into the season and Djokovic hadn’t played a match all season till he took to court this week.

And all he took was an hour and 15 minutes to get past the 19-year-old Lorenzo Musetti in his opening round match in Dubai.

There was some rustiness in Djokovic as he managed to get just 56% of his first serves in but he won 77% of those points and that allowed him to save all of the seven break-points that he faced in the encounter.

In turn, Djokovic broke his opponent three times of the four opportunities he got, and carved out a 6-3, 6-3 victory in the end.

Khachanov will be a slightly more difficult rival but that shouldn’t bother the world number one that much either.

Khachanov Scrapes Past De Minaur

While his opponent in the second round had it easy, the same wasn’t the case for Khachanov who was on court for two hours and 48 minutes to architect his win.

In a match of fluctuating fortunes, Khachanov was up an early break but lost that initiative in the seventh game of the opening set. Not that it mattered as he broke right back and served it out to claim the set.

The second set saw more of the swinging fortunes with the two players exchanging breaks in the first three games, before de Minaur went 5-2 up. Back to back breaks for Khachanov meant he was serving for the match soon after only to get broken and lose the tie-breaker that followed.

In the decider, it was de Minaur who got the early break but Khachanov held his nerves to not only break back but also clinch the match as his opponent served to stay in the match at 5-6.

Khachanov will need to do a lot better than give away 13 break-point opportunities to Djokovic like he did in this encounter.

Djokovic v Khachanov Prediction and Tip

This, while it’s a tougher battle on paper, shouldn’t test Djokovic too much as he looks to get into full rhythm. Expect a straight-set win for the world number one.
