Nadal Extends Unbeaten Run

World No. 5 Rafael Nadal extended his unbeaten run to 12 matches in 2022 as he marched into the quarterfinals of the Acapulco Open with another convincing win on Wednesday.

The 21-time Grand Slam champion won 77% first-serve points and converted five of six break points to race past the United States’ Stefan Kozlov 6-0, 6-3 on Wednesday. Serving well, Nadal dropped just 10 points on his serve to dispatch the World No. 130 in an hour and 17 minutes.

He had needed the same amount of time to win his opening round match against Denis Kudla. The former no. 1 didn’t face a single break point against Kudla, while he served eight aces and converted 3 of 5 break points to win 6-3, 6-2.

A three-time champion and one-time runner-up in Acapulco, Nadal is chasing a 91st career title in the tournament. He began the season by winning the Melbourne Summer Set title and then overturned a two-set-to-love deficit in a dramatic Australian Open final to win the record 21st major.

The 12-0 start to the season is the best-ever start for the 35-year-old, whose previous best was an 11-0 start in 2014. Can he keep the unbeaten run going?

Paul Battles Past Lajovic

The United States’ Tommy Paul is into the quarterfinals of a fourth tournament this season. The American, who missed out on reaching the last eight at just the Australian Open this year, dug deep to defeat Dusan Lajovic in the Round of 16 on Wednesday.

Although Paul won 13 fewer points than the Serbian, he won the key moments of the match to score a 7-6 (8-6), 2-6, 7-5 victory in two hours and 40 minutes.

Paul had reached the second round after his first round opponent Matteo Berettini retired during the match. The Italian had won the first set, but was trailing 1-5 in the second when he retired.

Ranked No. 39, the 24-year-old featured in the last eight of both the Adelaide tournaments and was a semifinalist at Delray Beach. He is 9-4 for the season and has now matched his 2020 performance at Acapulco. Can he cause a huge upset in the quarterfinals to reach a first Mexican Open semifinal?

Nadal v Paul Prediction and Tip

Nadal is in sensational form and stopping him won’t be easy. Expect the Spaniard to advance with a straight sets win. He could be playing Medvedev again in the semifinals if both win their matches on Thursday.
