Baez beat Ramos-Vinolas in the first round of the Australian Open this year. That was their only meeting which the Argentine won in five sets.

Ramos-Vinolas Sees off Bagnis

Days after winning the Cordoba Open, Albert Ramos-Vinolas is on the brink of a second ATP final of the season.

The Spaniard, ranked No. 31 in the world, eliminated Argentina’s Facundo Bagnis 7-5, 6-2 in the quarterfinals of the Chile Open on Friday.

The first set was a tough one with Bagnis taking a 2-5 lead following a break of serve in the sixth game. But the 34-year-old clay specialist fought his way back into the set, winning the next five games in a row to draw first blood.

Both players missed break points in the first two games of the second set, and both broke each other in the next two to stay on serve at 2-2. But it was Ramos-Vinolas who took control of the match from that point on and he never looked back, winning four consecutive games and sealing the victory in an hour and 54 minutes.

The win follows Ramos-Vinolas’s 6-2, 7-6 (7-4) victory over compatriot Carlos Taberner in the Round of 16.

A four-time champion at the tour-level, Ramos-Vinolas improved his season record to 8-3. This is the second time he is featuring in Santiago. In 2020, he lost to Casper Ruud in the semifinals on his tournament debut.

Baez Holds Off Monteiro

Seventh seed Sebastian Baez continued to impress in Santiago as the 21-year-old Argentine defeated Brazil’s Thiago Monteiro in the last eight to reach the semifinals on Friday.

In a hard-fought two-hour-and-42-minute contest, Baez saved 9 of 13 break points and converted 5 of 8 to win 7-5, 3-6, 6-4 and reach a maiden tour-level semifinal.

This was the toughest match in the tournament for Baez so far. He began his Santiago campaign with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Peru’s Juan Pablo Varillas ad then carved out a 6-3, 6-3 win over fellow Argentine Juan Ignacio Londero in the Round fo 16.

Following Friday’s win over Monteiro, Baez improved his season record to 8-6. The 21-year-old, who won six Challenger tournaments from nine finals last year, had earlier reached his first tour-level quarterfinal in Cordoba, only to be beaten by Alejandro Tabilo.
