Jasmine Paolini v Irina Bara Head to Head

Paolini and Bara have never played each other on the WTA tour before this, but met on the junior circuit in the past. The diminutive Italian owns a 2-1 head-to-head record at that level, winning their last encounter in 2017.

Paolini Suffers Doha Heartbreak

It hasn’t been a great start to 2022 for Jasmine Paolini. The Italian is looking to build on a breakthrough year on the WTA tour in which she amassed two titles and won 20 matches.

Historically, Paolini tends to be a slow starter. She has won two main draw matches so far in February, the same number as last season at this stage.

Last week, the 26-year-old came close to defeating Elise Mertens in the first round of the Qatar Open, but lost 3-6 6-2 5-7. It is pertinent to note, even with the insurance of a double-break in the third set (led 4-1), she could not close out the match.

This jittery form is an apt reflection of Paolini’s shattered confidence. She is yet to advance past the second round at any tournament this season. While in Dubai, she did not pass the qualifying rounds. Aside from the Mertens defeat, Paolini’s other four losses this year have all come against players ranked below her in the rankings.

Bara Gets Another Lucky Break

This will be Irina Bara’s fifth tournament of the season. The Romanian’s previous four participations resulted in defeat in the qualifying rounds (although she was fortunate enough to get a lucky loser spot at the Australian Open). That remained her only main draw appearance before this week.

Lightning has struck twice again, as Bara gets another main draw shot at the Lyon Open. She has replaced countrywoman Irina-Camelia Begu who has withdrawn from the tournament.

The 26-year-old Romanian has never reached the Top 100 of the WTA rankings, and currently sits at No. 117. She has featured predominantly on the lower rungs of the WTA circuit where she has nine titles (eight of them coming from her beloved clay courts).

Bara is coming off a damaging defeat to Arantxa Rus in the qualifying rounds of Doha. She won three games in 6-3 6-0  defeat. But given Paolini’s own struggles in recent weeks, is another upset on the cards?

Paolini v Bara Prediction and Tip

Bara has a modest record on indoor hard courts. This looks like a perfect opener to get Paolini’s season up and running.

Tip: Paolini to win AND under 18.5 games: 6/5 (Click Here to Bet with bet365)
