Caroline Garcia v Martina Trevisan Head to Head
Garcia and Trevisan have played once before this. That meeting took place on the hard courts of Dubai last season. The Frenchwoman won in straight sets.

Caroline Garcia was handed a brutal opener on home turf against the hard-hitting Camila Giorgi. But the Italian top seed had a horrendous day at the office, serving a whopping 12 double faults in the match and relinquishing her one-set lead.
Garcia was not at her best in the first set where Giorgi largely dictated play. The Italian’s serve was the cornerstone of everything good she did. She won 87% first-serve points and converted two of her four break points to take a close first set 7-5.
But momentum shifted the Frenchwoman’s way in the second set. Giorgi’s numbers began to diminish. Garcia managed to get most of the balls back in play and extend the rallies. She managed to hold in the sixth game of the second set after saving a couple of break points which, in all likelihood, would have handed the match on a tea tray to Giorgi.
However, the pressure was back on towards the end of the set, as Giorgi’s serve faltered in the ninth game. Garcia broke and went on to serve for the set successfully. In the decider, Giorgi’s game began to deteriorate as double faults crept in. She served five double faults in that third set alone and barely won any points behind her second serve.
Garcia completed a third-set whitewash in just 26 minutes to book her spot in the second round.

Trevisan Sees Off Countrywoman Cocciaretto
Martina Trevisan picked up just her second main draw win on tour in 2022 after defeating her countrywoman Elisabetta Cocciaretto.
Cocciaretto had entered the WTA Lyon tournament with a protected ranking. Her absence in the early weeks of the season was due to recurring injuries. And it was clear she was woefully short of match practice in her match against Martina Trevisan.
Trevisan took just an hour and a half to dispatch the World No. 232 despite landing 60% first serves in the entire match. She broke Cocciaretto three times and perhaps crucially, saved an impressive seven break points behind her own serve.
The former French Open quarterfinalist has now won three matches on French soil in 2022, having reached the Grenoble ITF quarterfinals just a few weeks earlier. Can Trevisan shock the local favorite in Thursday’s much-anticipated second round?

I wouldn’t go as far as calling it a resurgence, but this has been a really encouraging start to the year for Caroline Garcia despite owning a negative win-loss record. Having banked a win over Halep last week, and now Giorgi, the Frenchwoman should be unfazed by the task of taking on Trevisan.
