Shuai Zhang v Dayana Yastremska Head to Head

It’s 1-1 between the two players; Zhang won their last meeting in the 2019 Wimbledon.

Yastremska Continues her Comeback

A run like the one in Lyon has been long in the making for Dayana Yastremska.

She won her first title in late 2018 and has since clinched two tournaments while reaching the final in another.

That runner-up feat was in Adelaide International 2020; from that point on, it has been quite a ride for the young Ukrainian. In early 2021, she was provisionally suspended for doping – it was lifted only in mid-season and Yastremska returned to the tour only in July.

The lack of form and momentum didn’t make the resurgence easy and as a result, she slipped out of the top 100 from a career-high of #21.

She has been working hard this season with her recent quarterfinal performance in Dubai (as a qualifier) marking one of her best performances in quite some time.

This week, Yastremska has continued to build on it. After saving match points in the opener against Anna Bondar, she dispatched Cristina Bucsa and Jasmine Paolini in straight sets. Then came the big gun, the number two seed Sorana Cirstea. The match didn’t prove to be too difficult as she took the match 7-6(5), 4-6, 6-4.

Zhang, Boasting Experience

While Shuai Zhang may be up against a formidable next-gen player, she will fancy her chances nonetheless. As the current doubles number seven and a former top 25 in the singles, she can very well give Yastremska a run for her money.

More importantly, she has got a fair bit of steam in her engines. Unlike her adversary, Zhang has seen a fair of success last season – she won three doubles titles (including the US Open) and reached the final in WTA Nottingham and Angers Challenger. She also played in the concluding rounds in Palermo, San Jose, and Cleveland.

Admittedly, Zhang hasn’t been the most consistent singles player. Before coming to Lyon, the 33-year-old had lost her first-round match in five of her last six events.

Here, the number eight seed has had a chance to turn it around. Without losing a set, Zhang seamlessly moved past the likes of Kristina Mladenovic, Arantxa Rus, Vitalia Diatchenko (retired), and Caroline Garcia.

Zhang v Yastremska Prediction and Tip

Yastremska is well-motivated and would like to win this one for many reasons. She has delivered a substantial proof of concept that she can reach great heights on the tour. And Zhang, by all means, is an opponent she can overcome.

The question remains how she fares on Sunday and if she can respond to Zhang’s superior experience and form.
