The pair have never played each other before. This will be the first match between the 29-year old American, and the Argentine, who is nine years younger.

Sock Has History in Indian Wells

Sock, at the height of his career, had a fine record in Indian Wells, reaching the semi-finals in the singles, twice winning the doubles and finishing on the losing side in the final on another occasion.

That was, though, before a combination of injuries and loss of form saw his rankings tumble and he has had to rely on a wildcard to make the main draw this time.

Nowadays, he alternates between the Challenger Tour and competing in ATP events, either through qualification, or more recently, through wildcards.

That explains how he came to be playing in both Dallas and Delray Beach, where the outcome was the same in both cases. A first round victory over a German qualifier and then a second round defeat at the hands of a compatriot – in Dallas it was down to  Taylor Fritz, whilst Reilly Opelka was responsible in Delray Beach.

Cerundulo Makes His Masters Debut

Cerundulo is not only appearing in Indian Wells for the first time, but this will be his debut at a Masters event.

He burst onto the scene last year, winning his maiden ATP event in Cordoba, and three titles on the Challenger tour, enabling him to qualify for the NextGen ATP finals in Milan in November.

So far, he has played very little in 2022, although he did make his Grand Slam debut in Melbourne, losing in four sets in the first round to the Czech qualifier Tomas Machac.

In his only tournament since then, he was beaten in the first round in Santiago by the Spanish world number 105, Carlos Taberner.

Sock v Cerundulo Prediction and Tip

This is a match between a man who has done almost everything at Indian Wells and one making his Masters debut. Greater familiarity with the court and conditions should give Sock the edge.
