Isner Powers Past Scwartzman

2012 finalist John Isner produced another power packed performance as he knocked out 14th seed Diego Schwartzman in the the third round on Tuesday to move into the Round of 16 for the eighth time at Indian Wells.

The 23rd seed didn’t face a single break point against the Argentine on Tuesday, while he broke Schwartzman once in each set to register a 7-5, 6-3 win in an hour and 20 minutes.

The American had also needed just two sets to beat compatriot Sam Querrey in the second round on Sunday. Isner struck 21 aces in that match to win 7-6 (8-6), 7-6 (7-2).

Against Schwartzman, the big-serving American served just 13 aces, but had 30 winners in all compared to the Argentine’s 18.

Ranked No. 23, the 36-year-old American has had an up-and-down season so far. He was a semifinalist in Dallas, but didn’t have much success in the other tournaments as a result of which he brought a 4-6 record to the tournament. He has gone past the fourth round just twice at Indian Wells. Can he reach a third quarterfinal on Wednesday?

Dimitrov Eases Past Bublik

No. 33 seed Grigor Dimitrov eased into the fourth round with a clinical straight sets win over Kazakhstan’s Alexander Bublik in the Round of 32 on Tuesday.

The Bulgarian started the match on a very strong note, breaking Bublik in the second game of the first set and then holding on to the lead to close out the set. He started the second in a similar style, breaking Bublik in the first game and then staying in control of his serve to dispatch the Kazakh 6-3, 6-4 in just 70 minutes.

Dimitrov withstood nine aces from Bublik and also had six fewer winners than his opponent’s 20, but he also made seven fewer unforced errors than Bublik’s 18.

The World no. 35 had also beaten Jordan Thompson in straight sets in the second round, beating the Australian 7-6 (7-3), 6-2 in an hour and 41 minutes.

Tuesday’s win improved the 30-year-old to 6-4 this season. He was a semifinalist in Melbourne and a quarterfinalist in Delray Beach.

Dimitrov is now a win away from reaching the Indian Wells quarterfinal for the second time in his career. Last year, he made the semifinals of the tournament for the first time in his eighth attempt.
