Sofia Kenin v Anhelina Kalinina Head to Head

Kenin and Kalinina are yet to play each on the WTA tour before this, but have crossed paths on the ITF circuit in their embryonic tennis years. The American leads the head-to-head 2-1, winning their last hardcourt match at the Rancho Santa Fe ITF in 2017.

Kenin Gets Another Wild Card In spite of Poor Form

On current form, Sofia Kenin’s chances of turning her season around are looking bleak. All hope has slowly dissipated as the American’s tumble in the rankings continues to take effect.

Kenin is now outside the world’s Top 100 after a shambolic start to 2022 which has seen her register just a couple of wins all season. She has since lost six straight matches after making the quarterfinals of Adelaide in the early weeks of the tennis season.

The 23-year-old had the tennis tour in the palm of her hand shortly after capturing the Australian Open title in 2020. But the spell of doom seems to have kicked in, as is common among new entrants in the Grand Slam winners circle. Kenin has found it difficult to balance expectations with her own talents.

Last year she won 11 matches in six months and decided to shut down her season after Wimbledon due to a foot injury. While she is still relatively young to write her off, Kenin needs a major renaissance in the upcoming weeks to challenge again.

This will be Kenin’s fourth main draw appearance at the Miami Open, and would have missed out had it not been for a wild card entrant.

Difficult Start To 2022 For Kalinina

Anhelina Kalinina has enjoyed a steady rise on the women’s tour in the past 12 months, highlighted by her Top 50 debut and reaching her maiden WTA final in Budapest last season. Kalinina also won an impressive five titles on the ITF circuit in 2021.

Kalinina, however, has endured a turbulent start to 2022both on and off the court. She has been the recipient of some very tough draws. Her four defeats have come against the likes of Clara Tauson, Alison Riske, Jessica Pegula, and most recently Iga Swiatek –  a formidable quartet.

And given the ongoing conflict back in her homeland, Kalinina has been watching in grief. These are unprecedented times for Ukraine and its athletes all over the world. The 25-year-old is set to make her Miami Open main draw debut and will be seeking for just her third win of the year.

Kenin v Kalinina Prediction and Tip

Kalinina was one of three players that managed to take a set off Iga Swiatek in Indian Wells last week. It is a massive achievement in itself considering just how well the Pole is playing right now. The onus is on Kenin to win this one, but on current form, I don’t have enough faith in her that she can turn her season around just yet.
