Zidansek Looking for First Win in Miami

2021 French Open semifinalist Tamara Zidansek brings a 5-3 season record to what will be her second main draw appearance in Miami. The 24-year-old went down in the first round on her debut in 2019.

Ranked no. 25 in the world, Zidansek lost her second round match to Petra Matric in Indian Wells. Her best this year was a run to the semifinals in Adelaide-2, but she couldn’t take part in the final four clash, having to withdraw with an injury. She did  recover in time for the Australian Open and produced a career-best third round finish.

The Slovenian, who has produced better results on clay than on other surfaces, picked up her maiden WTA title at the Swiss Open last year and also had a runner-up finish in Colombia during a season which saw her break into the top 50 and continue moving towards the top.

Zidansek couldn’t win a match in Indian Wells, will she succeed in winning her first match in Miami.

Zvonareva Makes a Brisk Start

She had tough qualifying rounds, having to fight back from a set down in both the qualifiers, but when it came to the main draw, former World No. 2 Vera Zvinareva breezed past her first round opponent Misaki Doi in straight sets.

Currently ranked 117th, the 37-year-old Zvonareva needed just 73 minutes to dispatch the World no. 93, 6-4, 6-1.

Zvonareva converted five of nine break points  but couldn’t save the only break point that she faced in the first set. While the first set was a tight one, it was all one-way traffic in the second with Zvonareva dropping just three points on her serve.

Zvonareva had scored comeback wins over Sweden’s Mirjam Bjorklund and Ukraine’s Lesia Tsurenko in the first and second qualifiers respectively to reach the main draw in Miami for a 13th time. She is a two-time semifinalist but hasn’t played in Miami since a first round exit in 2015.

Zvonareva had come into the tournament with a 1-7 record this season, with her only win coming in the first round of her season opener in Melbourne and she made a first round exit in thenext six tournaments.

Zidansek v Zvonareva Prediction and Tip

Three wins including the ones in the qualifiers would have been a huge confidence booster for Zvonareva. But she may still find it tough against the 19th seed. Zidansek should advance to the next round.
