Sorana-Mihaela Cirstea v Shuai Zhang Head to Head

The pair have played each other twice before, with Cirstea winning each time, although both those two matches were on clay.

Their first meeting was in a junior event in 2008, and their more recent match in Strasbourg last year.

Cirstea Has Mediocre Miami Record

Cirstea first played in Miami in 2008, but, in the intervening years, she has never been beyond the third round – and that was back in 2013 – a feat she can emulate this year if she beats Zhang, because she was given a bye into this stage of the competition.

The Romanian is in good form this year so far, reaching the fourth round of the Australian Open and the semi-finals in Lyon.

She also reached the third round in Indian Wells, beating first Ajla Tomljanovic of Australia, and then Anna Kalinskaya before her run was ended by Simona Halep, in an all-Romanian clash.

Lyon Winner Zhang Hopes for Good Show

Zhang came into the Sunshine Double in good form, having just won her first title for more than four years – and her first ever on foreign soil – in Lyon, where she beat the Ukrainian Dayana Yastremska in the final.

Her Indian Wells campaign was over almost before it began, well beaten by the Australian qualifier Daria Saville in straight sets in the first round, but she has done better in Miami, although helped by a slice of fortune.

Drawn against the Danish teenager Clara Tauson, she claimed the first set, despite going two breaks down in the first part of it.

An early break of serve in the second was enough for the Dane to level the match, and Zhang had just been broken again early in the third set, when Tauson felt an injury and could not continue.

Cirstea v Zhang Prediction and Tip

Cirstea has beaten Zhang in their two previous meetings, and, although those matches were on clay, she will be confident of doing so again. The Chinese woman may count herself slightly fortunate to have got to this stage, but her luck may be about to run out.
