Hurkacz Will Look to Begin Well

Hubert Hurkacz hasn’t been as dangerous as he was last year, but still brings a decent 10-5 record to Miami, where he begins his title defence on Saturday.

Ranked No. 10 in the world, the Polish player had won his maiden ATP 1000 title at the Miami Open last year, defeating Italy’s Jannik Sinner in the final. That was one of the three titles he won last year, which also included the Delray Beach and the Moselle Open titles. And the list of accomplishments doesn’t end there as Hurkacz also made it to a maiden Grand Slam semifinal at Wimbledon during a 36-23 season.

This year, he has not been as dangerous as he was last year, yet the Pole brings in a decent 10-5 record to Miami.

Hurkacz’s best performance this year came in Dubai where he was a semifinalist. He also played a huge role in taking his country to the semifinals of the ATP Cup, winning all three of his singles matches at the Round Robin stage.

Most recently, Hurkacz appeared at the Indian Wells Open, reaching the round of 16 before falling to Andrey Rublev.

The 25-year-old has a tough opener but will be hoping to begin well in a bid to defend his title.

Rinderknech Knocks Out Djere

World no. 58 Arthur Rinderknech knocked out Serbia’s Laslo Djere in straight sets on Friday to reach the second round of the Miami Open on his debut.

The Frenchman saved a set point in the second set tiebreak, before sealing a 6-2, 7-6 (8-6) victory in an hour and 45 minutes.

Rinderknech saved seven of seven break points in the match and converted two of five to improve his 2022 record to 11-6.

He had a great start to the season, reaching his maiden final at Adelaide-2, but finished runner-up to Thanasi Kokkinakis, despite having taken a one-set-to-love lead.

The 26-year-old Frenchman also made it to the semifinals in Doha but was stopped from reaching a second final by Nikoloz Basilashvili. He has struggled a bit since then but will be happy to have started well in Miami and will now be looking to cause an upset on Saturday.
