Quest For Sunshine Double Takes Effect For Fritz

Taylor Fritz kicked off his 2022 Miami Open campaign on a winning note, beating Kazakh qualifier Mikhail Kukushkin 6-3 5-7 6-3 in slightly over two hours.

The new World No. 13 did not have it all his way in the three-set contest, with doubts creeping in regarding his ankle after appearing to twist it during his final practice at Indian Wells. But Fritz was particularly pleased with his body in general, and how overcame a tough test just a few days after his dream title win at the California desert.

Fritz began the match with an incredible level of intensity, breaking his opponent to love and setting the tone for the rest of the set. However, Kukushkin fought back and played with confidence in the second set.

Having earned his first tour-level win of the season in the previous round, the Kazakh secured his first break point in the 12th game of the second set to force the decider.

Fritz avoided the upset. His serve was instrumental in digging him out of a hole. He served 10 aces and won an impressive 85% first-serve points, as he rounded off the win with two service breaks in the third set.

Fritz is attempting to become the first man to win the Sunshine Double in five years, joining an illustrious list that contains the likes of Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic.

Unseeded Paul Eliminated Khachanov

Tommy Paul knocked off the number 23 seed Karen Khachanov in his very own three-setter and solidified his status as a Top 40 player.

The 24-year-old who sits at a career-high ranking of No. 37, took two hours and 27 minutes to overcome the brute power of Khachanov, taking an evenly balanced match in a deciding tiebreak.

Paul wasted three match points in game 12 of the third set, but prevailed in the ensuing tiebreak, cutting down errors and coming up with some spectacular shots that hurt the Russian.

The unseeded Paul had never won a main draw match at the Miami Open prior to this year, falling in the first hurdle in each of his last two appearances. But he has made up for it with a good run to the third round. Can he shock Fritz and end his compatriot’s bid of scooping the Sunshine Double?

Fritz v Paul Prediction and Tip

Paul has improved by leaps and bounds in the past 18 months, particularly on his backhand side which used to be an area of weakness. Fritz is going to have to work his socks off to dispatch his fellow American here.
