Alexander Zverev v Thanasi Kokkinakis Head to Head

They played twice before with each player winning one match. Their most recent one came in the 2018 Hopman Cup when Kokkinakis pulled out the win 5-7 7-6(4) 6-4.

Zverev Picking Up Form in Miami

Alexander Zverev never played well in Miami but this year’s it’s been better than usual. The second-round matchup against Borna Coric was a fun one and he was able to pull it out. In the 3rd round, he faced Mackenzie McDonald and easily defeated them.

It’s a good thing to see from Zverev who had a bad outing in Indian Wells. The German has generally disappointed more this season than he has impressed and with the season switching to clay he is in need of some wins. Kokkinakis is a measure opponent and one he can certainly beat so a QF appearance in Miami is within grasp.

He will need to do the usual things and avoid problems with the serve in order to get there but it’s a huge ask from Zverev who can do it when he wants to.

5-match Winning Streak for Kokkinakis

Thanasi Kokkinakis is on a 5-match winning streak and the Australian is finally getting back to where he was before injuries derailed his career. It’s a great thing to see him competing every week and playing some good tennis. The Australian Open doubles title with Kyrgios lifted him even more and it’s finally showing in singles.

A couple of good wins for the Australian who saved a match point against Diego Schwartzman in round 2. He then outlasted a very inspired Denis Kudla in three sets with Zverev coming up. Having played so many matches will take a toll on his body however he is quite strong.

If he can muster up some additional endurance and inspiration he can certainly make the Zverev matchup an interesting one. He has beaten him in the past so can he do it again, find out below.

Zverev v Kokkinakis Prediction and Tip

Alexander Zverev and Thanasi Kokkinakis have not played in over four years. Their most recent clash was won by Kokkinakis but the German is a far better player at this stage. Kokkinakis is too but the difference in quality is larger than in 2018.

Zverev has shown a high level in Miami so far which should give him confidence after some bad performances. Kokkinakis is riding a 5-match winning streak so his confidence is sky-high. The Australian is obviously a bit more fatigued after two long matches back-to-back.

So who will win this? I tend to think it’s going to be Zverev mostly due to the fatigue factor. The matchup is not ideal for Kokkinakis as Zverev can defend really well and in these conditions, the serves of both will be crucial. Zverev has the advantage there as well so I think it will be Zverev.
