Mackenzie McDonald v Nick Kyrgios Head to Head

McDonald won their only meeting in Washington last year.

McDonald Doesn’t Have a Great Record on Clay

Mackenzie McDonald brings a 9-8 season record to Houston. The 26-year-old American, who was a finalist in Washington last year, didn’t have a great start to 2022, failing to win two consecutive matches in most of the tournaments. He finally won two in Dubai to reach the last eight and then again won two in Miami.

On of those wins in Miami was a second round victory over Grigor Dimitrov. However, he couldn’t go deeper in the tournament after being outclassed by Alexander Zverev in the third round.

Not too experienced on clay, McDonald doesn’t have a great record on the surface and is yet to win a match in Houston, having lost in the first rounds in 2018 and 2019.

Overall, he has a 5-9 career record on clay, with two of those wins coming in the first rounds in Munich and Roland Garros. It will be interesting to see if he can win his first match in Houston.

Kyrgios Returns to Clay After Three Years

Nick Kyrgios’s breathtaking strokeplay is a treat for any tennis lover, but despite his brilliance, he tends to self destruct almost every other tournament.

He had his latest meltdown in Miami, when he lost his cool during the fourth round match against Jannik Sinner. He smashed his racket a number of times, got into a heated argument with the umpire, was given a point penalty that cost him the first set and then got a game penalty which put him a break down in the second set and eventually cost him the match.

Up until that point Kyrgios had played some flawless tennis in Miami, which included a straight sets thrashing of Andrey Rublev. He was also a quarterfinalist in Indian Wells and brings a 7-3 season record to Houston. This has been a pretty good season for the Australian, who didn’t play much over the last two years and had a poor run in 2019.

A six-time ATP champion, Kyrgios is 1-1 in Houston, making it to the quarterfinals in his only appearance in 2018.

The 26-year-old doesn’t have a great record on clay, but still has more experience and more wins than his first round opponent. His overall career record on the surface is 25-21 and will be playing his first tournament on clay since exiting the Round of 32 at the Rome Masters in 2019.

McDonald v Kyrgios Prediction and Tip

It’s gong to be an interesting matchup. Kyrgios doesn’t like playing on clay and McDonald is inexperienced on the surface. Given how Kyrgios has been playing he could be the one who wins this contest and advances into the next round.
