Henri Laaksonen is not enjoying a very good 2022 year which is a shame as last year was very good for the Swiss player. So far this year it’s been mostly poor results and a lot of lost matches against opponents he would have easily beaten last year.
A key issue for him is his confidence which was very high last year. It was evident in his aggressive play as he didn’t back down even against stronger opposition. This year he has lacked it completely folding against weaker opponents quite regularly.
He has a 5-10 record on the year which could be a lot better. His most recent win was in Miami over Benoit Paire who is hardly giving max effort. A switch to clay might be good for him as he can play well on the surface although he is no specialist.

Gasquet Feisty as Ever
Richard Gasquet is getting up there in age yet the veteran is not thinking about retirement and he is still kicking around. Even at this age, Gasquet is a very tough out and not many players have an easy time against him. His 6-6 record on the year show that he can still win matches against some of the best.
Recently it’s been okay at best for him as he generally finds a way to beat okay players but when presented with a better player he simply lacks the level to move past them. A switch to clay could make things interesting for Gasquet as generally plays rather well on the surface.
His backhand creates a lot of angles for him on the surface which gives him a chance to stay in the match much more than on hard courts where players can outhit him. He put Nadal through the wringer last year at the French Open and while his level dropped off this year it’s still pretty good.
Laaksonen v Gasquet Prediction and Tip
So their only match came on clay but that was over four years ago. Gasquet was younger, better and quicker than he is today and while he is still the favourite in this matchup I doubt it will be as dominant as the 6-2 6-3 win in Bastad. The reason why Gasquet is a favourite is simply that his baseline game can trouble Laaksonen quite a bit.
THe Swiss player is not the strongest mover and his chance would be higher indoors because he can outhit Gasquet. On clay, the savvy Frenchman can create angles that will force Laaksonen to play tennis the way he doesn’t like to play.
I fancy Gasquet in this matchup as I think he can get the job done. It’s the first match on clay this year for him so there might be some troubles but I generally believe he has enough to win this match. Back the Frenchman to get it done.
