Roberto Carballes Baena v Marco Cecchinato Head to Head

It’s 1-1 at the tour level, with Cecchinato winning in the quarterfinals in Buenos Aires in 2019a and Carballes Baena getting the revenge in the same tournament the next year.

If one were to include the qualifiers and the Futures tournaments then Cecchinato has a 4-2 overall lead against the Spaniard.

Carballes Baena Has Struggled in Q1

He didn’t get going in the first quarter, but Robert Carballes Baena will be hoping to deliver better results now, as the action shifts to two months of clay season.

A clay court specialist, Carbales Baena won his only tour-level title in Quito on clay in 2018. He hasn’t reached another final at the tour-level, but 32 of his 34 finals at the Challenger and the ITF levels have come on clay, and he has won all his 17 titles on the surface.

So Carballes Baena will be hoping to do better than the 2-8 start that he is off to in 2022. That’s only the main draws of the tour-level events. He is 2-2 in the qualifying rounds and on both the occasions he made it to the main draw as a lucky loser.

One was in Adelaide-2 where he lost in the first round and the other was in Rio, where he got even luckier with a first round bye, only to lose in the Round of 16.

The 29-year-old’s two wins came during the South American clay season, as he won his first round matches in Cordoba and Buenos Aires but was sent packing in the Round of 16.

While he has struggled at the top level, Carballes Baena has done well on the Challenger tour this year. He finished runner-up at Gran Canaria (clay) in February and most recently featured in Marbella where he lost in the quarterfinals.

He is 4-2 in Morocco and was a semifinalist in 2014 when the tournament was played in Casablanca. Can he come back to form in Marrakech?

Cecchinato Yet to Win in 2022

Facing the Spaniard is 2018 French Open semifinalist Marco Cecchinato. The Italian is 0-7 from all levels this season and will be desperate to get back to winning ways.

Cecchinato has played two tour-level matches and has lost both, against Philipp Kohlschreiber at the Australian Open and Miomir Kecmanovic in Santiago. He also lost first qualifying rounds in Buenos Aires, Rio and Indian Wells to players ranked much lower than him and couldn’t go past the opening round in the two challenger tournaments that he featured in, falling to then World No. 150 Fernando Verdasco in Phoenix and then World No. 148 Chun-hsin Tseng in the first round in Marbella.

As a result of his consistent poor performances, Cecchinato has now fallen to World No. 97. The Italian who had peaked to No. 16 in 2019 is now in danger of falling beyond 100 once again.

He will however hope to draw inspiration from the three titles that he has won at the ATP level, all three have come on clay. He also has two runner-up finishes, again both on clay, with one of them coming last year in Parma.

Cecchinato will be making his debut in Marrakech, hoping to start well.

Carballes Baena v Cecchinato Prediction and Tip

It’s an interesting match-up between two clay specialists who have struggled to win so far. Had he been in form, Cecchinato would have been the favourite but since he is struggling and Carballes Baena has done well in the Challenger tournaments, the Spaniard will be expected to win in the first round.
