Evans on Marrakech Debut

He won all three of his matches at the ATP Cup and then reached the semifinals in Sydney, but since then Daniel Evans has cooled down a bit.

The World No. 26, who won his maiden ATP title at the Murray River Open last year, is 8-6 so far this season. In his last match he was beaten by Japan’s Yoshihito Nishioka in teh Round of 64 in Miami. That defeat had followed his third round loss to Rafael Nadal at Indian Wells.

The 31-year-old Briton has a season record of 10-18 on clay, but will be playing his first match on the surface this year. He did fairly well last year, winning six matches on the surfaces. Four of those came at the Monte-Carlos Masters, where he knocked out Novak Djokovic and Hubert Hurkacz en route the semifinals only to fall t0 Stefanos Tsitsipas.

Making his debut in Marrakech, Evans will hope to get off to a decent start.

Andujar is a Three-time Champion

Facing Evans will be one of the most successful players in Morocco, Pablo Andujar. The 36-year-old Spaniard won back-to-back titles in 2011 and 2012 and then when the tournament moved to Marrakech, he reached two more finals, beating Kyle Edmund to win the title in 2018 but falling to Benoit Paire in 2019.

While Evans makes his season debut on clay, Andujar has already played nine matches on the surface, including the Challenger Tour and is 3-2 at the tour-level and 6-3 overall on the surface.

Last week, he reached the semifinals of the Marbella Challenger before falling to Argentina’s Pedro Cachin.

Overall, Andujar has four titles from nine finals. The only time he won outside Morocco was in Gstaad in 2014.

With an 18-3 record in the tournament he surely is a legend in Morocco and will be a difficult player to beat.

Evans v Andujar Prediction and Tip

Evans is the second seed but will be wary of his opponent. Andujar would be hoping to maintain his dominance in Marrakech. The Spaniard will be a slight favourite to upset Evans.
