World No. 34 Tommy Paul advanced to the second round after Germany’s Peter Gojowczyk withdrew from the third set of a gruelling contest between the two.

The first two sets needed tiebreaks to separate the two, with Gojowczyk winning the first-set tiebreak, while Paul taking the second set tiebreak and forcing the decider. It was on serve in the third, with Paul leading 3-2 when the german had to withdraw from the contest after two hours and 23 minutes.

Both players held nine break points in the match and both capitalised on two of them. While Gojowczyk dominated the first set tiebreak, it was a very close one in the second set. Both players had three minibreaks to draw level at 5-5 before the seventh seed won the next two points to stay alive.

With the win, Paul is now 15-7 this season. A semifinalist in Delray Beach, the 24-year-old also made three quarterfinal exits this year. He will be aiming to reach a fifth quarterfinal of the season on Wednesday.

Kyrgios Turns On Style on Return to Clay

Playing for the first time on clay since the Rome Masters in 2019, Nick Kyrgos started off on a winning note, playing an entertaining brand of tennis to build on strong 2022.

The 26-year-old Aussie, who reached the quarterfinals in Indian Wells and the fourth round in Miami, improved to 8-3 this season as he rallied to beat the United States’ Mackenzie
McDonald 4-6, 6-3, 6-4.

McDonald went a break up early and then protected the lead to take the first set. But the 26-year-old Kyrgios made a solid comeback. He broke the American in the fourth game of the second set and the first game of the third to seal the match in an hour and 53 minutes.

Kyrgios served 18 aces to McDonald’s 11, with 16 of those coming in the second and third sets, as he got better with the match.

The Aussie, doesn’t play a lot on clay, but on Wednesday, he will hope to reach a second quarterfinal in Houston, having reached that stage in his only appearance in 2018.
