Van de Zandschulp Eases Past Kopriva

Botic van de Zandschulp backed his strong first round showing with a straight sets win over the Czech Republic’s Vit Kopriva in the second round of the Marrakech Open on Thursday.

The World No. 43 needed just an hour and 19 minutes for a 6-2, 6-4 win. It was a much easier outing for the 2021 U.S. Open quarterfinalist than his first round match against Hugo Dellien, when the Bolivian clay court specialist took him to three before falling 3-6, 6-3, 4-6.

Against Kopriva, Van de Zandschulp had a brilliant first set, as he saved both the break points that he faced and converted both that he held. The second set got a bit tough though. The World no. 165 Kopriva lost two service games early to fall 0-3 behind but he didn’t allow Van de Zandschulp to run away with the contest as he came right back with two breaks to draw level at 4-4.

The Dutchman broke again in the next game and then held serve to close out the match. With the win he now has a 5-1 record on clay at the tour level.

This will be Van de Zandschulp’s second last eight appearance of the season. He had previously made it to the quarterfinals in Melbourne. Can he reach the final four for the first time since reaching that stage in St. Petersburg in October last year?

Molcon Upsets the Top Seed

Alex Molcan scored the biggest win of his career as he toppled the top seed and World no. 9 Felix Auger-Aliassime in the second round on Thursday.

Having never beaten a top 10 player before, the Slovakian showed nerves of steel, saving two match points in an incredible contest which went down the wire.

Molcan got an early break in the first set only to see it wiped off in the eighth game, but he restored the advantage immediately and then served out the first set. In the second, Auger-Aliassime took charge, breaking the World no. 65 twice and taking the match into the deciding set.

Both players exchanged a break early before the Canadian held a match point on Molcan’s serve at 5-6 (30-40). The Slovak saved the match point and it eventually needed a tiebreak to separate the two. Auger-Aliassime had another match point at 6-7 in the tiebreak but Molcan saved again before closing out the dramatic two-hour-and-37-minute contest 6-4, 2-6, 7-6 (9-7).

The victory improved the 24-year-old Molcan to 7-5 in 2022. The left-hander, who had begun the season by reaching the last eight in Melbourne, had beaten Italy’s Stefano Travaglia 6-0, 6-4.

Van de Zandschulp v Molcan Prediction and Tip

Van de Zandschulp is the seeded player but he will be wary of Molcan’s form right now. The Slovak’s confidence will also be sky high after his first top 10 win. Expect him to beat another seed in the quarterfinals.
