Taylor Fritz v Cristian Garin Head to Head

The pair have never played each other before. This will be the first match between the 24-year old American, and the Chilean, a year older.

Indian Wells Winner Fritz

Fritz has pedigree on clay from his junior days, finishing runner-up at the boys’ singles at the French Open in 2015 to compatriot Tommy Paul.

And he arrived in Houston with the biggest win of his career under his belt, having beaten Rafael Nadal to win the Indian Wells Masters.

Losing in the fourth round in Miami was perhaps a hangover from that, but, having been given a first round tie, Fritz got back to winning ways with a comfortable win over another Chilean player, Alejandro Tabilo, the world number 100.

The American number one began strongly, breaking Tabilo in his opening two service games. One more break gave him the first set.

When Tabilo was broken again at the start of the second set, the match seemed all over bar the shouting. However, Tabilo briefly made it interesting by breaking the Fritz serve in turn, only to undo all his hard work by dropping his serve once more when serving to stay in the match.

2019 Champion Garin Battles His Way Through

This Championship holds a special place in Garin’s heart because it was here in Houston three years ago that he won the first of his five ATP titles, all of them on clay.

He has made heavy weather of getting to this stage this year though, needing three sets to beat the American wildcard, Jack Sock, the world number 137 in the first round.

He started the clear favourite against Jordan Thompson, the world number 83, in the second round, a man not associated with success on clay. But the Australian clearly had not read the script, and it was he who took the first set.

Garin roused himself, broke Thompson midway through the second set and consolidated to take the match to a deciding set.

The Australian dropped his serve at the start of the third set again and one more break put the man from Chile in charge of the proceedings. Thompson clawed one of them back, but serving to stay in the match, was broken again.

Fritz v Garin Prediction and Tip

Garin is an accomplished clay court player and a previous winner of this tournament. But Fritz is playing with supreme confidence right now, and will believe he has a shot at another title this week.
