Vandeweghe in a Resurgent Mode

Former World No. 14 Coco Vandeweghe is having herself quite a time in Charleston. Despite starting as a qualifier and losing the final prelim game, the 30-year-old has made it to the quarterfinal – by the virtue of the lucky loser rule.

In the three matches played so far, she had dismissed Anastasia Gasanova, Lauren Davis, and the number six seed Jessica Pegula. While the first two wins came in straight sets, the third one over Pegula went to three sets before Vandeweghe emerged as the winner with 6-4, 3-6, 6-4.

Currently ranked #168, this is Vandeweghe’s fourth tournament of 2022. She has played in two ITF events (one semifinal) and also in the Australian Open; she succumbed to Qinwen Zheng in the qualifiers.

Being a two-time Grand Slam semifinalist and a two-time French Open quarterfinalist, Vandeweghe is certainly experienced enough and seems comfortable enough on clay. She will fancy her chances over Anisimova.

Anisimova Knocks out Sabalenka

20-year-old Amanda Anisimova added more miseries for Aryna Sabalenka as she dismissed the top-seeded wildcard 3-6, 6-4, 6-3. In the preceding round, Anisimova knocked out Yulia Putintseva 6-1, 6-2.

The current World No. 47 started the year on a decent note but her form has dropped since. After winning the title in Melbourne 2 and reaching the fourth round in the Australian Open, Anisimova moved on to lose early in Dubai, Doha, Indian Wells, and Miami.

That said, Anisimova is a former top 30 player herself and is more than comfortable on clay. Case in point, her best Grand Slam result came at the Roland Garros where she reached the semifinal in 2019.

The youngster has also beaten a handful of top WTA players already, including Simona Halep, Naomi Osaka, and Belinda Bencic.

Vandeweghe v Anisimova Prediction and Tip

This is close to call as the match can swing either way. Vandeweghe is definitely not the favourite here but makes for a good underdog bet; her chances of toppling Anisimova are not as bad as the bookmakers make it out to be.

In either case, we are quite likely in store for another long, entertaining game of tennis.
