Djere’s Dominant Run Continues

Serbia’s Laslo Djere made it to the first semifinal of the season with a straight sets victory over Italy’s Lorenzo Musetti on Friday.

The World No. 55 has been very dominant this week, having not dropped a set in the first three rounds. He began the tournament with a 6-4, 6-4 victory over the Czech Republic’s Jiri Lehecka and then ousted Turkey’s Malek Jaziri 6-4, 6-2 in Round 2.

On Friday, Djere needed just an hour and 15 minutes to beat the World No. 82. The Serb was very good in the first set, saving all three break points that he faced in the third game before breaking in the sixth game and then holding on to take the set.

In the second, Musetti started off brightly, going 0-2 up but Djere shook off the slow start, winning the next six in a row to advance.

With the win, Djere is now 6-7 for the season. He was a quarterfinalist in the season opener in Adelaide-1, but won just one of the next six. He has finally found form on his favourite surface, where he clinched both his tour-level titles. He was also a finalist in Cagliari last year. Djere will now be aiming to reach a fourth ATP final on Saturday.

Molcan Tops Another Seed

A day after saving two match points during a dramatic three-set win over the top seed Felix Auger-Aliassime, the Czech Republic’s Alex Molcan took out another seeded player in Botic Van de Zandschulp to make it to the final four in Marrakech.

Molcan is now a win away from reaching a second tour-level final. The 24-year-old lefty was a finalist at Belgrade-2 in May last year, where he went down to Novak Djokovic in the title clash.

Just like the match on Thursday, Molcan needed three sets to beat the Dutchman in the quarterfinals on Friday. He dropped the first set, but bounced back in the next and then edged past the World No. 43 in the third for a 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 victory in an hour and 52 minutes. The Slovak had 11 break points in the match but he converted just three of them. His opponent had three breaking opportunities, and he took two of those.

On Thursday, Molcan had completed his first-ever top 10 win, beating the World No. 9, 6-4, 2-6, 7-6 (9- 7) in two hours and 37 minutes. The only easy outing for him in the tournament was a first round win over Stefano Travaglia, when the World No. 65 prevailed over the Italian 6-0, 6-4.

Friday’s win improved the Czech’s season record to 8-5. Can he keep the winning momentum going?

Djere v Molcan Prediction and Tip

Djere seems to have finally found his rhythm this season. He will also be the fresher of the two players, having stormed into the semifinals without much fuss. In contrast, Molcan is coming off two mentally and physically draining contests. It will be interesting to see if that will be a bane or boon in the semifinal.

Expect a close contest with Djere prevailing.
