Sinner Hoping to Put Fitness Woes Behind Him

Sinner enters the clay court season with a 16-3 win-loss record under his belt for the year but with the possibility of a slight worry about his fitness.

After having withdrawn from his fourth round match of the Indian Wells Open against Nick Kyrgios, Sinner went on to retire from his quarterfinal against Francisco Cerundolo because of blisters on his foot.

Hopefully now for Sinner, all that is behind him but the greater challenge now is for the Italian 20-year-old to translate that hard court form on to clay – a surface not quite his most favourite.

Last year, Sinner had been knocked out of the second round here at Monte-Carlo Masters but did make it as far as the semifinals in Barcelona and the fourth round at French Open. Can he kick things off in Monte Carlo with a performance that gives him the shot in his arm he needs to get going on this surface?

Coric in Only His Third Tournament

Injuries have taken a toll on Coric who has barely played since the start of the 2021 season. As a result of that, the once 12th-ranked Croat has fallen to 199th on the ATP charts.

And in the two tournaments he has played this season, Coric has won just one of the three matches he’s played. And even that win came against the fading Fernando Verdasco.

What Coric will need to do is find a source of inspiration in order to be able to compete on a surface he has generally struggled on too.

One of the ways he could look at doing that is reminiscing his last appearance at the Monte-Carlo Masters – it came in 2019 and Coric had defeated Hubert Hurkacz, Jaume Munar and Pierre-Hugues Herbert to make it to the quarterfinal.

Seems like a big challenge for now but can he use that performance to put up a fight in this opener?

Sinner v Coric Prediction and Tip

Sinner might not be at his best on clay but against a woefully out of form opponent who himself isn’t the best clay-courter, he should start off as a huge favourite.

Tip: Sinner to win in straight sets: 10/11 (Click Here to Bet with bet365)
