Diego Schwartzman v Karen Khachanov Head to Head

The pair have played each other four times before, all on hard courts, and the head to head record is two wins each.

In 2017, Schwartzman won at the Miami Masters, but Khachanov avenged that loss at the US Open.

The Argentine won again in Vienna in 2019, but Khachanov claimed the most recent victory at the Tokyo Olympics last year, where he went on to collect the silver medal.

Schwartzman Looking to Improve his Monte Carlo Record

Although renowned as a clay court player, Schwartzman does not have the best of records in Monte Carlo. He reached the quarter-finals in 2017, but that is the only time he has been beyond the second round.

However, he is in good form this year on his favourite surface, finishing runner-up in his home event in Buenos Aires to Casper Ruud and, again, the following week in Rio, this time beaten by Carlos Alcaraz.

At Indian Wells he beat the Finn Emil Ruusuvouri before losing to John Isner.

He would have been less satisfied by his performance in Miami where, having been given a first round bye as the number 13 seed, he was then beaten by the Australian doubles champion Thanasi Kokkinakis.

Khachanov’s Unhappy Spell in America

It is one of the ironies of his career that Khachanov’s two Grand Slam quarter-finals have come on the two surfaces that seem to suit his game least – the grass of Wimbledon last year, and the clay of Roland Garros two years earlier.

Certainly his record in the clay court Masters’ tournaments is nothing to boast about, with a third round appearance in 2018 the best he has managed in Monte Carlo.

His best performance of the year so far came in Doha where he reached the semi-finals before losing to Roberto Batuista-Agut.

The following week in Dubai he lost to Novak Djokovic, but had an unhappy time in America, losing in the second round in both Indian Wells and Miami, after being given an opening round bye each time.

Schwartzman v Khachanov Prediction and Tip

Whilst they have an evenly matched head-to-head record, this will be the first time they have played on clay, a surface that suits the natural game of Schwartzman more than it does Khachanov.
