Taylor Fritz v Marin Cilic Head to Head
They played twice before with each winning one affair. The most recent one game last year in St. Petersburg with Cilic winning 7-6(3) 4-6 6-4.

Taylor Fritz was very lucky to escape against Lucas Catarina (world number 430). The native Monegasque player put up an inspired effort and played far better than his level but Fritz should have cruised in that match and he didn’t. It took him 3 sets to do so and a superb comeback in the final set where he was down a break for the majority of it.
The American has been somewhat shaky since his Indian Wells triumph and his performance in the first round is hard to explain. Whether it’s jet lag or something like that is known but he will need to be a lot better if he wants to do anything against Cilic.
He dropped serve several times and generally was off for the majority of the match struggling with the wind as well as the conditions in general.

Cilic Back Home
Marin Cilic is one of many tennis players that calls Monaco home and playing at this event gives him great comfort. As Novak Djokovic put it the other day, there is simply something refreshing about sleeping in your own bed, a sentiment tennis players don’t get to experience quite often.
That being said, the record of Cilic in Monaco is rather unimpressive. He made the quarterfinal once but that was thanks to a retirement and an easy draw. He is not a terrible clay player but something about Monaco never quite clicked for him.
This is a great chance for him especially if Fritz puts up another weak performance. He looked good and comfortable against Tsonga and he will need more of that.
Fritz v Cilic Prediction and Tip
If this match was played on American soil Taylor Fritz would be the heavy favourite and he would probably win easily. However, it’s not played hence why Cilic is the favourite in this one with the odds sharply dropping on him. It’s closely related to the performance Fritz put out in round 1 as he was nowhere near anything resembling a top player.
Whether he can improve that level in less than 24 hours seems unlikely but Cilic has his troubles as well. Quite often he will complicate matches where he is cruising and that is something to be aware of. I don’t trust either player to be completely honest but we have to choose one victor.
I’ll side with the common sentiment of Cilic being better at the moment as I’m very unease about the way Fritz played. Yes he might be better, yes he might give Cilic trouble but I doubt he can win. Go with Cilic and let’s hope he delivers.
