Not quite known to be a clay-courter, McDonald kick-started his campaign on this surface for the season with an appearance in Houston two weeks ago. And it did not end too well for the American.
The world number 51, who had made it to the third round in Miami late last month, fell in three sets to Nick Kyrgios in his Houston opener.
Add that to McDonald’s record on clay and we could be looking at a tough time for him even here. The American had won just two main draw matches on red dirt in 2021, and just three in his career before that.
Now, coming into this tournament, McDonald will probably be relieved to have drawn a player who has never been better than 149th in the world. A rare win on this surface could be in the offing for him.

Lucky Loser Grenier Facing Wretched Form
Neither is clay his favourite surface, and nor has Grenier been in any kind of form on other surfaces either this season.
The Frenchman’s only wins this year, a mere five in number, have come in the main draw of Challenger competitions or in the qualifiers of ATP tournaments.
Having lost eight of his previous nine matches at every level of tennis, Grenier would have been relieved to break that momentum with a win in the first round of qualifiers here against Nikolas Sanchez Izquierdo.
But a straight-set rout at the hands of Carlos Taberner was par for the course and that’s how it ended.
That he has been given a lifeline as a lucky loser should help him earn extra ranking points but that might not be enough to see him through to the next round.

This shouldn’t get too difficult for McDonald as he looks to carve out a straight-set win over Grenier, going in as a 1/3 favourite to win it.
