Having risen to a career-high ranking of 283rd in the world earlier this month, Alvarez Varona has dropped a couple of spots since then. A qualification for his first ever ATP competition main draw, however, should help him improve things drastically again.
The Spaniard was 7/3 odds to win his opening qualifier against German veteran Philipp Kohlscreiber and came through in a final set tie-breaker to advance to the second. And Alvarez Varona then defeated Max Alcala Gurri in straight sets to make it through to the main draw.
It has been an underwhelming year for Alvarez Varona otherwise with just one main draw match won even on the Challenger circuit – a result which came in Marbella. And even there, he had made it to through to the first round as a lucky loser.
