Dimitrov on the Rise

Grigor Dimitrov is on the rise once again. A couple of weeks ago he reached the quarterfinals of the Indian Wells Open and last week, he went a step ahead at Monte-Carlo, reaching the semifinals of the ATP 1000 tournament.

Dimitrov defeated World No. 20 Nikoloz Basilashvili, World No. 7 Casper Ruud and World No. 14 Hubert Hurkacz en route the final four in Monte Carlo before falling to Alejandro Davidovich Fokina. Thanks to that performance the former No. 3 rose six more places in the rankings to reach No. 23 this week.

Dimitrov had also reached the semifinals in the season opener in Melbourne and the last eight in Delray Beach.

The 30-year-old is an eight-time tour-level champion but hasn’t won a title since 2017. He has also not reached a final since his defeat in Rotterdam in 2018.

This is his fifth appearance in Barcelona, with his best being a quarterfinal finish in 2018. He has a 58.2% win record on clay and will look to build on the 4-1 start he has had on the surface.

Coria Knocks out Giron

World No. 52 Federico Coria was pushed to the third set, but he raised his level in the decider to move into the second round of the Barcelona Open.

The 30-year-old dominated the first set with two breaks of serve, but was broken three times in the second, while converting just two breaking chances as Giron made a strong comeback. In the third, the Argentine lifted his game once again and broke the American twice without dropping a service game to take the two-hour contest 6-2, 3-6, 6-1.

The win improved the clay specialist to 10-8 for the season and improved his clay record 9-5 in 2022.

Coria, who reached a maiden ATP final in Bastad last year, was a semifinalist at the Marrakech Open recently, winning against Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, Mirza Bašić and Richard Gasquet before losing to David Goffin. He was also a quarterfinalist in Buenos Aires and Rio.

Making his debut in Barcelona, he will be hoping to get more wins under his belt but will have his task cut out in the second round.

Dimitrov v Coria Prediction and Tip

It’s a battle between two in-form players. While Coria will make it tough, eventually Dimitrov should use all his experience to send the Argentine packing.
