Ajla Tomljanovic v Lesia Tsurenko Head to Head

The pair have played each other once before at the Miami Open four years ago, Tomljanovic winning in three sets.

Tomljanovic Cruises Past Compatriot

With the shock retirement of Ashleigh Barty, Tomljanovic has inherited the mantle of Australian number one, although her results so far in 2022 have been nothing to write home about, and she had never been beyond the second round of any event prior to arriving in Turkey.

She was originally due to pay Alison van Uytvanck in the first round but, when the Belgian dropped out, lucky loser and fellow Australian Jaimee Fourlis took her place, currently ranked number 236 in the world.

Perhaps overwhelmed by the experience, Fourlis made a nervous start, dropping her opening two service games. One more break gave Tomljanovic the first set.

Fourlis put up more fight in the second set, responding to an early dropped serve with a  break of her own. But Tomljanovic broke once more and there was no way back for her fellow Australian after that.

Tsurenko Storms into the Second Round

Tsurenko is better known as a hard court player, having won four WTA titles and finished runner-up in tournaments on that surface, although she is not a complete novice on clay as a fourth round appearance in the French Open in 2018 demonstrated.

Her world ranking now means that she had to come through qualifying in Istanbul, where she overcame the challenge of first Caty McNally of the USA, and then the Australian Fourlis.

She started her first round match against Anna Karolina Schmiedlova, of Slovakia, the underdog, but stormed through the first set without dropping a game in just 29 minutes.

The Slovakian made more of a match of it by sharing the first four games of the second set, all against serve, but then the Ukrainian reeled off the next four games to clinch an impressive victory.

Tomljanovic v Tsurenko Prediction and Tip

Tomljanovic will start favourite because of her seeding and world ranking, but after Tsurenko’s first round performance, she should not be taken lightly.

Tip: Tomljanovic to win: 5/8 (Click Here to Bet with bet365)
