Felix Auger-Aliassime v Frances Tiafoe Head to Head

Auger-Aliassime beat Tiafoe in their only meeting at the U.S. Open last year. The Canadian had needed four sets to win the Round of 16 contest.

Auger-Aliassime Wins a Tough Opener Against Taberner

Felix Auger Aliassime had an edgy start to the tournament, as he needed three sets to win the second round contest against Spain’s Carlos Taberner on Wednesday and move into the Round of 16.

The third seed, who had a first-round bye, out-aced Taberner 7-0, but double faulted nine times in the contest, an area he would look to improve in the next round.

The World no. 9 won the first set comfortably and even got an early break in the second, but the world No. 94 wasn’t going down without a fight, he quickly got the break back and then broke again to get ahead in the second set, before closing out the set in a six-deuce ninth game that saw him save three break points and convert a fourth set point.

With Taberner putting up a fight, the third set became interesting. Both players held serve for the first seven games of the decider, before the 21-year-old Canadian broke in the eighth. Taberner responded with a break in the next game, only to see the Canadian break again and take the match 6-1, 3-6, 6-4 in two hours and 44 minutes.

Auger-Aliassime had an excellent start to the season. He led Canada to its first ATP Cup title, then made it to the last eight at the Australian Open before capturing his first-ever ATP title in Rotterdam and then reaching another final the next week in Marseille. But ever since losing that final to Andrey Rublev, he had won just one match in the next four tournaments. So the win over Taberner would come as a relief to the Canadian but it will be interesting to see if he can carry that form against a tougher opponent in the next round.

Auger-Aliassime is just one win away from equalling his best in Barcelona, which was a quarterfinal finish last year.

Tiafoe Dumps Out Dellien

Meeting Auger-Aliassime in the third round will be 13th seed Frances Tiafoe, who knocked out Bolivia’s Hugo Dellien in straight sets on Wednesday.

The World no. 29 Tiafoe had also received a first round bye. He had a bit of a tough start against the Bolivian qualifier, needing just under an hour to seal the first set in the tiebreak. But once he was up a set, he took control of the match and breezed past Dellien for a 7-6 (7-3), 6-1 victory.

The win meant Tiafoe is now 7-6 this season.

The American, who is a decent player on clay, having featured in the Estoril Open final in 2018, was a quarterfinalist in Houston and had featured in the Round of 16 in Miami.

This is the first time that the 24-year-old will will be featuring in the round of 16 at Barcelona, having been knocked out in the Round of 32 in the previous two appearances. Can he make the quarterfinals this year?

Auger-Aliassime v Tiafoe Prediction and Tip

Auger-Aliassime didn’t get off to a convincing start but he will take heart from that performance and look to build on that start with a win in the Round of 16.
