Simona Halep v Shuai Zhang Head to Head
There have been four previous meetings between these players and both Halep and Zhang have won two apiece. Halep defeat Zhang in the 2012 Indian Wells opener but then went down in successive matches in 2016.
In 2019, they met again at the quarterfinals of Wimbledon where Halep was a straight-set winner on her way to the title.

After a slightly underwhelming last season, Halep looks to be coming into her own this year.
The Romanian player has already won a title, which came in Melbourne in the lead-up to the Australian Open and then made the semifinals in both, Dubai and Indian Wells.
That said, she would have loved to do better than the fourth round exit at Australian Open while the first round loss to Caroline Garcia at Doha would rankle hard.
Making it slightly more difficult coming into this encounter is Halep hasn’t played on clay since May last year when she had to retire from her Rome Open opener against Angelique Kerber because of a calf injury.
It was one of three injuries that kept Halep out of the last season for most part. Can she shrug off her injury woes and get started afresh on clay this year?

Zhang’s Struggles on Clay Well-Known
Zhang is a former top-25 player and even now, the 33-year-old can hold her own on the court, ranked 40th in the world.
On clay, however, things have never looked rosy for the Chinese player and those woes have continued this season too.
Having featured in both, the Charleston Open and Stuttgart Open, Zhang has won just one of the three matches she’s played, falling to Claire Liu in the second round at the former and to Ekaterina Alexandrova in the first round of the latter competition.
And she now opens her campaign here against a former French Open winner. Life cannot be expected to be too easy for Zhang.
Halep v Zhang Prediction and Tip
Halep, while she hasn’t played a lot of clay court tennis, should win this one but will it be a straight-setter is the question. It might not be worth the 4/11 on offer.
