Jabeur Sees Off Paolini

Ons Jabeur endured a tough start in Madrid overcoming Italy’s Jasmine Paolini in straight sets on Thursday.

The Tunisian, ranked no. 10 in the world, was made to work hard in the first set by the feisty Italian. Jabeur came back from a break down twice and then Paolini did the same, taking the set to tiebreak. It was very difficult to separate the two in the tiebreak as well, but after 20 points Jabeur was one-set-up. She got better as the match progressed, breaking Paolini twice to take the match 7-6 (11-9), 6-1.

Jabeur, who had a 48-win season last year, has displayed excellent form in her recent campaigns. The 27-year-old was a finalist in Charleston and reached the quarterfinal in Stuttgart.

With Thursday’s win, Jabeur is now 15-7 this season and she will be keen on improving that record further.

Gracheva Fights Back to Upset Cornet

Varvara Gracheva rebounded after losing the first set to knock out France’s Alize Cornet in the first round on Saturday.

The World No. 34 Cornet looked in complete control of the first set, getting both the breaks in the set. But Gracheva made a resounding comeback. The World no. 73 bounced back over the next two sets.

The 21-year-old Gracheva came back from a break down twice in the set and then converted another break point to take the match to the decider. Cornet had a great start to the third breaking the Russian twice and taking a 0-3 lead, but Gracheva clawed her way back into the contest.

She pulled a break back in the fourth game and then broke again in the 10th when Cornet served for the match. Gracheva eventually got a third break in the set as well to wrap up the match 1-6, 7-5, 7-5 in two hours and 47 minutes.

Gracheva had qualified for the main draw with straight set wins over Maddison Inglis and Heather Watson.

The Russian’s next challenge will be to win two successive main draw matches at the tour-level this year. She had three opportunities of doing that but failed to achieve that in Dubai, Lyon and Istanbul.

Can she be fourth time lucky?
