Daniel Evans v Federico Delbonis Head to Head

Evans won their only meeting in Wimbledon in 2019.

Evans Struggling to Win Matches

With three wins in three matches at the ATP Cup against strong opponents, a run to the semifinals in Sydney and a third round appearance at the Australian Open, Daniel Evans would have been very encouraged with the start he got this season, but since the first major, he has had a wretched run and comes to Madrid with a 3-8 record from the last eight tournaments.

What’s worst is that the World No. 35 has struggled to find form on clay. Not that he has a very good record on the surface, where he has a 33.3% win record, but having reached the semifinals of the Monte Carlo Masters last year by beating Novak Djokovic en route, the expectations from him to deliver this season had increased.

He has recorded just one win on clay this year from four tournaments and is currently on a three-match losing streak. The 31-year-old Briton suffered his most recent defeat in first round of the Munich Open where he went down to Maxime Cressy in straight sets.

Can Evans turn it around in Madrid? He is 2-2 in the Spanish capital with last year’s performance being his best, when he won the first two rounds, before falling to Alexander Zverev in the Round of 16.

Delbonis Out of Form as Well

Just like Evans, Federico Delbonis, too, has tasted very less success this year. The World no. 36 was a semifinalist in Buenos Aires, but since then he has had a torrid time, winning just two matches from the next seven tournaments. His last act was a second round defeat in Barcelona after he received a first round bye.

Clay brings the best out of the 31-year-old, whose two titles and two runner-up finishes at the tour-level have all come on the surface, but he hasn’t reached a final since 2016.

Delbonis has a 55.7% win record on clay from 237 overall tour-level matches and he is 5-7 this year.

When it comes to Madrid, he has a 4-4 record, having made just one first round exit. Last year was is best, when he came through the qualifiers and defeated Pablo Carreno Busta and Albert Ramos-Vinolas before falling to Matteo Berrettini in the Round of 16.

Evans v Delbonis Prediction and Tip

With both players struggling, both will be desperate to return to winning ways. Delbonis is a clay specialist and has lots more experience than his opponent, expect him to edge past Evans in the opening round.

Tip: Delbonis to win in three sets: 3/1 (Click Here to Bet with bet365)
