Karen Khachanov v Lucas Pouille Head to Head

Khachanov leads 3-2, with his most recent win coming in Mallorca last season.

Four of their matches have needed a deciding set to separate them. Khachanov has won their only meeting on clay at the French Open in 2018.

Khachanov’s Form Remains Dodgy

A semifinal appearance in Belgrade may seem to have ended Karen Khachanov’s poor run of results, but remember he needed just one win to reach the last four of the Serbia Open.

Khachanov had a first round bye and received a walkover in the Round of 16. He did beat Thiago Monteiro in the quarterfinals to end a four-match losing streak, but was beaten by Novak Djokovic in the semifinals.

Last year’s Olympic silver medallist is 12-10 this season. He had a bright start to 2022, finishing runner-up in Adelaide-1, reaching the quarterfinals in Adelaide-2 and the semifinals in Doha, but he has gone off the boil since then.

Can he regain his early season form in Madrid?

That seems a bit difficult. Clay isn’t Khachanov’s preferred surface and neither has he been able to produce results in Madrid. The Russian is 1-4 in the tournament, and the 25-year-old four-time tour-level champion will most likely be making another early exit.

But he will fancy his chances against his first round opponent, who has seen a steady decline in form and rankings over the last couple of years.

Can Pouille Halt his Slide?

Former World no. 10, Lucas Pouille has struggled ever since his return to tennis last year following an elbow surgery that kept him out for more than a year. The Frenchman went 5-14 last season and is 2-3 so far this year.

He has mostly been playing in Challenger Tour this year and was a quarterfinalist at the Madrid Challenger earlier this month.

Of his three tournaments this year, Pouille reached the quarterfinals in Marseille, winning his first two matches and that performance came after he was off to a 1-7 start from all his matches at all levels.

The World No. 156, who is 36-35 overall on clay, won one of his five career titles on clay, in Budapest in 2017. At the Madrid Open, he has a 2-4 record and will be playing in the tournament for the first time since 2019.

Khachanov v Pouille Prediction and Tip

Both players are a bit off colour, but Khachanov still is much better placed than Pouille when it comes to recent performances. Expect Khachanov to ease into the second round.

Tip: Khachanov to win in three sets: 3/1 (Click Here to Bet with bet365)
