Coco Gauff v Simona Halep Head to Head

Halep has won both their previous meetings, at Wimbledon in 2019 and in Indian Wells this year.

Gauff Edges Past Putintseva

After racing past Anna Karolína Schmiedlová in the first round on Thursday, Coco Gauff faced some tough competition from Yulia Putintseva on Saturday, but the World No. 16 eventually won the contest 6-1, 2-6, 6-4 in two hours and 21 minutes to advance to the Round of 16.

On Monday, the American will be vying for a spot in a third quarterfinal of the season. The 18-year-old was a semifinalist in Adelaide-2 and a quarterfinalist in Doha.

Against Putintseva, Gauff double faulted 10 times in the match and almost blew away a brilliant start, but eventually she came through in the third set. She held as many as 21 break points in the match, converting six of them. Putintseva opponent held 13 chances to break Gauff, but the latter saved eight of those.

It was a much tougher contest than Gauff’s 6-0, 6-2 thrashing of Schmiedlová in the first round.

Thanks to the win, Gauff is now 12-8 this season and 2-1 on clay.

Last season, she enjoyed a 16-4 run on clay, which included the Emilia-Romagna Open title, a semifinal finish at the Italian Open, a quarterfinal appearance at the French Open (her first at a major) and a quarterfinal finish in Charleston.

Halep Hustles Past Second Seed

Two-time champion Simona Halep put up another dazzling show in Madrid as she demolished the World no. 2 Paula Badosa in straight sets to move into the Round of 16.

Halep, who had dispatched China’s Shuai Zhang 6-2, 6-3 in an hour and 10 minutes in the first round on Thursday, needed an hour and 14 minutes to beat the second seed Spaniard 6-3, 6-1.

It was another convincing performance for the Romanian who won 84% points on the back of the first serve, saved six of seven break points and converted half of the 10 break points that she held in the match.

The win improved the 30-year-old’s season record to 17-4. She had picked up her 23rd WTA title by winning the Melbourne Summer Set 1 trophy. She also reached the final four stage in Dubai and Indian Wells, but is playing her first tournament since her Indian Wells exit, as she was nursing a leg injury.

Halep won back-to-back Madrid titles in 2016 and 2017 and was a finalist in 2014 and 2019. Last year, she was eliminated in the Round of 16.

The win was the World no. 21’s 29th main draw victory in Madrid, which puts her in second place in the history of the tournament, three behind Petra Kvitova, who is a three-time champion.

Gauff v Halep Prediction and Tip

Halep is the superior player and also a player to beat in Madrid. Gauff’s a fighter and she will try to ask a few difficult questions of the Romanian, but expect the former No. 1 to advance to the quarterfinals.
