Emma Raducanu v Anhelina Kalinina Head to Head

This will be their first meeting on the WTA Tour.

Raducanu Hitting her Stride

Emma Raducanu is on fire in Madrid as she continues to sweep her competition aside in straight sets.

After dismissing Tereza Martincova in the opener, she moved on to beat Marta Kostyuk 6-2, 6-1 – winning 89% of her first service points and an incredible, seven games in a row.

Should Raducanu win the game against Kalinina, this will mark the first time since the US Open that she picks up more than two wins in a tournament. The last time it happened, she moved on to win the title. In all fairness, that can happen this week too.

The number nine seed has a streamlined path to the final; her next couple of opponents can potentially be Elena Rybakina, Daria Kasatkina, Bianca Andreescu, or Jessica Pegula. Not the toughest of the bunch but not the easiest either – nonetheless, she has a touch of destiny towards her and can very well overcome these players.

So far this season, Raducanu has had a rather muted run mired in early exits. But as she picks up the pace and confidence, that may change soon.

Kalinina, on a Roll

World No. 37 Anhelina Kalinina has already dismissed two Grand Slam winners in Madrid en route to the third round.

In the opener, she defeated Sloane Stephens 7-5, 6-4 and then stunned the local favourite Garbine Muguruza 6-3, 6-0. This is not entirely surprising from the Ukrainian, considering that she has had a couple of decent stints in 2022.

Despite starting the year on an inconsistent note with a lack of wins, she did pick up the pace in Miami by reaching the fourth round (defeating Madison Keys and Beatriz Haddad Maia en route).

After that, Kalinina reached the quarterfinal in Charleston  – this time by surpassing Elena Rybakina, Aliaksandra Sasnovich, and Alize Cornet. That said, she fumbled early in Istanbul by bowing out to Petra Martic in the opener.

Raducanu v Kalinina Prediction and Tip

Kalinina’s chances of winning this one are not that bad; she won four ITF clay titles last season alongside reaching her maiden WTA final – also on clay. She is clearly comfortable on the surface and will fancy her prospects of reaching the elite eight.

But then again, she is playing Raducanu who is delivering all sorts of surprises. This should be an interesting match – one that is on a level playing field.
