Karatsev Continues to Struggle

Aslan Karatsev kickstarted the season by winning the title in Sydney — his third at the tour-level.

The Russian won two rounds at the Australian Open as well, but ever since his third round defeat in the Melbourne major, the World No. 33 has won just two matches in eight tournaments.

Currently he is on a three-match losing streak. He lost in the third round of the Miami Open to Hubert Hurkacz and then lost his opening matches in Monte-Carlo and Belgrade to Holger Rune and Oscar Otte respectively.

Overall he has an 8-9 record this season. On clay, he is 0-2 in 2022, but is 9-8 over his career.

The 28-year-old is 2-1 in Madrid. On his debut last year, he defeated Ugo Humbert and Diego Schwartzman before falling to Alexander Bublik.

Goffin Back in Form

After struggling for close to 12 months, David Goffin has finally found his mojo back. The 31-year-old Belgian won his sixth career title in Marrakech, defeating Alex Molcan in the final.

He also won the first two matches in Monte-Carlo, before falling to Alejandro Davidovich Fokina. In the last tournament, Goffin made a first round exit from the Serbia Open, after going down in straight sets to Filip Krajinovic.

Ranked no. 55th in the world, the Belgian has a 61% win record on clay and is 7-2 on the surface this year.

He is 5-6 in Madrid, delivering his best performance in 2017, when he made it to the quarterfinals.

Goffin qualified for the main draw with straight set wins over Jiří Veselý and Alejandro Tabilo in the two qualifying rounds.
