Alexander Zverev v Marin Cilic Head to Head

They played eight times before and Zverev won 7 of those matches. The most recent one happened at the Adria Tour in 2020 with Zverev winning in three sets.

Zverev the Defending Champion

Alexander Zverev triumphed in Madrid twice in his career including last year when he absolutely cruised past everyone including Rafael Nadal. The German simply loves playing in Madrid and his game is tailor-made for the conditions in the Spanish Capital.

Zverev arrived nice and early after his shocking loss in Munich and that defeat against Rune is still on his mind. He talked about it extensively in the past few days but he also underlined that he is ready to do much better in Madrid. He’s been pretty good on clay so far this year semi-final in Monte Carlo.

Overall it’s been a disappointing year for him as he is only 16-8 on the year. If he can string together a run in Madrid that record will improve significantly.

Cilic Barely Surviving Round 1

Marin Cilic is not the greatest of clay players and that’s completely understandable. He’s a hard court player who loves grass and courts like that. While Madrid is a unique event it’s not that much suitable for Cilic. The Croatian had a lot of trouble against Ramos and he should have lost that match.

If the Spaniard hadn’t choked away the lead in the final set Cilic would have not been playing this match. With that said the Croatian has been okay this year. Nothing too special but that’s been the case for the majority of the past few years.

He’s 11-9 on the year and that won’t get much better during the clay season. He can try against Zverev but a 1-7 H2H does not sound too promising.

Zverev v Cilic Prediction and Tip

Zverev had dominated the matchup rather easily in the past and he won all three clay matches they played. Most of these matches happened a lot of time ago but since then Zverrev improved significantly and that can’t be said for Cilic.

The German will win this match I believe and he will win it comfortably. I don’t see Cilic being able to dominate the matchup in any sort of way and generally speaking his record in Madrid speaks for itself. He’s not been good in Munich but he will try much harder here and he will get the win.

Tip: Zverev to win in straight sets: 8/11 (Click Here to Bet with bet365)
