Diego Schwartzman v Miomir Kecmanovic Head to Head

They played twice before with Schwartzman winning both of these. Most recent on came in Buenos Aires last year with Diego getting it done 6-0 6-4.

Schwartzman, The Clay Master

Diego Schwartzman has never been the best player in the world but he has always been a very good clay player. According to stats, he is the 8th best clay player in the past couple of years a the eye test confirms that. He regularly beats players that are below him and very rarely drops matches to worse players.

He lost to Grigor Dimitrov in Madrid after an epic all-time performance by the Bulgarian and before that match, Schwartzman looked well on his way to a deep run. He loves playing in Rome and he has a very good record here. He defeated Rafael Nadal here and he played in the final before.

He’s 19-10 on the year and 15-6 on clay. He’s 461-220 on the surface all time and there are only a handful of players against whom he is not a good play on clay.

Hot Start for Kecmanovic, Cooling Off Now

Miomir Kecmanovic has been one of the better players on tour for the first couple of months. Back to back quarterfinals at the sunshine double in Indian Wells and Miami propelled him higher in the rankings which was a goal.

He is coming off a terrible year last year where he posted a 17-27 record. Now, under the tutelage of Nalbandian, Kecmanovic is playing strong and consistent tennis. The hot start has cooled off a bit in the past few weeks which is normal. It was unrealistic for him to play that good for soo long.

He still needs to improve quite a bit before climbing to the top but he can certainly do it. Clay is not strange to him and he can and has played well on the surface before. In Rome, he never advanced past the first round and it’s going to be tricky to do once more.

Schwartzman v Kecmanovic Prediction and Tip

This is a very interesting matchup between two players who played twice on clay before. Both matches were won by Schwartzman but Kecmanovic is a much better player this year than in either of those matches. Still, his form has been trending downward lately.

He’s not looked as sharp and he’s not looked as good as in the previous weeks and that will leave him vulnerable against Schwartzman. The Argentine is in peak condition, he’s playing well this year, he likes Rome and he will have a big result here.

All of that brings me to the conclusion that backing him against Kecmanovic is the play here. Sure, we might see three sets but that only increases the chance of the Argentine to win it. Back Diego.
