Alexander Zverev v Carlos Alcaraz Head to Head
The players have met twice, both meetings being in 2021. Zverev won convincingly on both occasions, early in 2021 in Acupulco and later in the year in Vienna.

Having just turned nineteen, Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz has had a phenomenal run this year, winning three titles including the Miami Masters 1000 and ATP 500s at Barcelona and Rio.
Breaking into the top ten of the ATP rankings last month, Alcaraz made the semi-finals this week in Madrid defeating his idol and King of Clay Rafa Nadal in the quarter-finals in a seesaw match that went to a decider.
As if beating Nadal was not a mountain enough to climb, the teenager from Spain was up against world number one and three-time Madrid Open winner Novak Djokovic in the semi-finals.
Playing each other for the first time, Alcaraz opened the match by breaking Djokovic in the opening game, but the Serb broke back soon to level the first set, which looked to be headed to a tiebreak.
The Djokovic serve continued to get better with every game as he started to hold with ease and push Alcaraz on every service game. With this being the trend, the Serb was the strong favorite going into the tiebreak and ran away with a 5-1 lead.
Down four set points at 2-6, Alcaraz clawed his way back for 5-6, but the Serb closed the set 7-5 in the breaker.
Alcaraz definitely upped the level in the second set holding with more ease and pushing Djokovic on his serve, who survived some anxious moments to keep holding.
With both players playing high quality tennis, Alcaraz pushed the Djokovic serve at 5-6 for three set points and then played a phenomenal point to equalize the match on his second set point.
Alcaraz was dictating points early in the third, but there was no going away from the world number one who saved five break points to level at 3-3 and then pressurized the Spaniard serve to be break point up.
The young Spaniard played some amazing points to stay on serve and then had match point at 4-5 on the Djokovic serve. However, the Serb dug deep to hold and then strong serving from both took the match into a final set tiebreak.
Alcaraz front ran in the breaker to go up with an early mini-break and although Djokovic leveled, it was another mini-break for the Spaniard giving him two match points at 6-4 in the breaker.
While Djokovic saved the first one on his own serve, the Spaniard closed the match on his racket to be the first man since 2010 to beat Nadal and Djokovic in the same tournament and the first ever to do it on clay, all two days after turning nineteen.

Zverev Looking For Third Madrid Title
World number three Alexander Zverev ended 2021 with an impressive win at the ATP Tour Finals defeating the top two players in the world Novak Djokovic and Daniil Medvedev.
It has not been the best start to 2022 for the German, losing early at the Australian Open and a string of poor results ranging from Montpellier to Acupulco to the Sunshine Masters.
A better showing followed to kick off the clay season in Monte Carlo with a semi-final loss to Stefanos Tsitsipas but then came the opening round loss at home in Munich to Danish teenager Holger Rune.
Defending champion this week here in Madrid, it was not the best of starts to the week for Zverev being pushed to three sets by veteran Maric Cilic, but since then it has been convincing going for the German defeating Lorenzo Musetti and Felix Auger- Aliassime.
In the semi-finals for a repeat of this stage at Monte Carlo, Zverev was off to a strong start against Tsitsipas taking the first set with a single break of serve.
Although the Greek fought back to break midway through the second set to take the match into a decider, it was all Zverev thereafter.
With two breaks of serve in the decider, Zverev avenged the Monte Carlo semi-final loss and made his way into another Madrid Open final gunning for a third title here.
Zverev v Alcaraz Prediction and Tip
This may not have been the final expected at the beginning of the week given the presence of Nadal and Djokovic in the draw, but will definitely be a contest everyone will be looking forward to given how the Spaniard has performed of late and especially this week.
Zverev is the defending champion and two -time champion here, so will be very comfortable with the occasion and the conditions.
A contrast of playing styles in the cards that will be go down to who is better on the big points; expect the teenager from Spain to prevail in a decider to win his second Masters 1000 and fourth title of the year.
