Iga Swiatek v Victoria Azarenka Head to Head

This will be their third meeting on the tour; it’s 1-1 at the moment with Swiatek enjoying the last laugh in the Adelaide International earlier in the season.

Swiatek on a Roll

Iga Swiatek has been nothing short of sensational this season and even then, it would be an understatement. She arrived for the Italian Open with a tally of 32-3, four singles titles, and having spent a week or so at the Rafael Nadal Training Academy in Spain.

Behind her, the 2020 French Open champion has three WTA 1000 titles from Dubai, Indian Wells, and Miami, and a 500 title from Stuttgart.

The 20-year-old Pole has been quite difficult to beat this season – only Jelena Ostapenko, Danielle Collins, and Ashleigh Barty have achieved this feat. Moreover, her last defeat came back in February.

Amidst stats like this, any player facing Swiatek is bound to face the heat. The number one seed enjoyed a bye into round two in Rome and dispatched Elena-Gabriela Ruse 6-3, 6-0, without breaking a sweat.

Having won the Italian Open last season, Swiatek looks well-positioned to defend her title.

Azarenka, Capable of Carving Upsets

By contrast, Victoria Azarenka hasn’t had the best of the season so far although, she is World No. 16 and has a tally of 10-6. In Rome, she won the doubles in 2019 and has reached the quarterfinal in her last two appearances in the singles draw.

Plus, as a two-time Grand Slam champion and three-time finalist, Azarenka has certainly got the experience and skills needed to beat someone like Swiatek.

It’s a different story, however, if she has the mental composure (and physical endurance) to do so. Azarenka has succumbed to many young players in 2022 like Elena Rybakina, 16-year-old Linda Fruhvirtova, and most recently, Amanda Anisimova in Madrid Open round three.

So far in Rome, she has overcome Viktorija Golubic and Camila Osorio in straight sets with very convincing wins to send a message to Swiatek.

Swiatek v Azarenka Prediction and Tip

This is one match where Swiatek can be tested and if Azarenka gets off to a good start, she can very well carve the upset too. This will be a cracker of a game, one that is likely to go three sets before we see a winner.

As things stand, Swiatek is the clear favourite and with her incredible game, she will frustrate Azarenka. But if the Belarusian can keep her feelings at bay, then she certainly makes for a good underdog bet.
