Rafael Nadal v Denis Shapovalov Head to Head

Rafael Nadal and Denis Shapovaov have contested five tour-level meetings before this, with the legendary Spaniard holding a 4-1 lead. Incidentally, their only two meetings on clay before this took place in Rome. Nadal emerged victorious in 2018 and in 2021, and won the title en route.

Nadal Tames Big Serving Isner

Rafael Nadal kicked off his quest for an unprecedented 11th title at Rome Open with a routine straight-set win over American John Isner.

The super Spaniard was looking to overturn last week’s frustrating loss to compatriot Carlos Alcaraz in Madrid and duly responded in just 77 minutes of match play. After a tight opening few games in which Isner went toe to toe with Nadal, the 10-time champion needed to stave off two break points to hold for a 4-3 lead.

Nadal’s matches can at times be more of a mental battle rather than a physical one. And in the very next game, Isner was broken for the first time in the afternoon when he overcomplicated a routine volley at the net.

It was the tonic that Nadal needed to grab a foothold in the second-round contest. He obliterated the American and read his serve as a book in the second set, breaking Isner on two occasions and romped to a 6-3 6-1 win.

With uncertainty surrounding Nadal’s fitness since he returned to action last week, those questions have been put to bed. The 35-year-old is looking healthier and sharper and will be the man to beat at the Eternal City.

Shapovalov Digs Out Another Hard-Fought Win

After a heated opening-round win over Lorenzo Sonego brought about by a contentious line call, Denis Shapovalov was tested again but passed the Nikoloz Basilashvili challenge in the second round of the Rome Open.

The Canadian did not look in a world of trouble against the Georgian on Court 1, and things certainly cooled off with the Italian fans whom he berated in his first-round match.

Shapovalov’s serve was firing on all cylinders in a match where he faced just one break point and saved it with aplomb. And across the net, there was very little in Basilashvili’s locker that posed any danger to his younger opponent, although the match remained tight to the wire.

Shapovalov converted one of only four break points and needed a second-set tiebreak to complete a straight-sets win to set up a third career meeting in Rome against 10-time champion Rafael Nadal.

Nadal v Shapovalov Prediction and Tip

Last season, Shapovalov gave Nadal his toughest bout in Rome, coming within a point of upsetting the Spaniard. In spite of his erratic form in recent weeks, we reckon this could be another stern test for Nadal whose movement can be exposed by Shapovalov’s ferocious ground strokes. We are backing the games market in this one.

Tip: Over 21.5 games in the match: 5/6 (Click Here to Bet with bet365)
